Teaching basic commands is like building a language bridge between you and your four-legged friend. Let's dive into the essential commands that will make you and your pup unstoppable!

1️⃣ Sit

Begin the command journey with a classic: "Sit". Start with a treat in hand, raise it just above your pup's nose. Your puppy will naturally lower its bum to a seated position. Once there say “Sit” and reward them with a treat. It's quick, easy praise that builds momentum.

Practice Sit before meals or walks, establishing it as the go-to behavior for earning rewards. Simple and effective!

2️⃣ Down

Seamlessly transition to "Down" from Sit. Lure your pup with a treat from Sit to a lying position. Holding the treat close to their front paws will guide them down. Say “Down” once they hold the position and then give the treat with lots of praise.

3️⃣ Come

The "Come" command is a life-saver! Say your dog's name and then "Come", if they look at you or come over to you give them a treat. Practice this from different distances and reward each time your dog recalls.

Mastering "Come" takes extra focus—add distractions slowly.

4️⃣ Stay

"Stay" is your safety net. Start with "Sit", back away, hand up, and command "Stay". After backing away, pause and then use “Come” to release them. Regular practice, especially with distractions, builds this valuable command.

5️⃣ Leave It

The "Come" command is a life-saver! Say your dog's name and then "Come", if they look at you or come over to you give them a treat. Practice this from different distances and reward each time your dog recalls.

🗣️ Verbal Praise: A simple “good boy/girl” in a happy tone will help your dog understand the desired behavior.

🦴 Reward Immediately: When they are done, reward your dog with abundant praise, treats, and play, every single time.

⌚ Extend Outdoor Time: Before going back inside, walk around or play for a bit. This prevents your dog from thinking that when they go, outdoor time has to end. Doing so will keep your dog from holding it in to extend the time.

🐶 Interrupt Accidents Gently: If you catch your dog about to go in the wrong place, gently interrupt them. Lead them calmly to the correct spot, and offer lots of praise when they finish.

🤬 Dealing with Accidents: Never punish your dog for accidents, as they often won't connect the punishment to the incident and may become fearful or confused. Instead, clean the area thoroughly to eliminate odors, reducing the chance of your dog using the spot again.
